| Cheap Washington DC International Spy Museum James Bond fans, history buffs and gadget geeks will especially enjoy this museum, dedicated entirely to the study of international espionage. For $16 you can spend the day discovering the tricks of the spy trade. This museum is deservedly popular. Consider purchasing advance tickets from the museum or Ticketmaster. (Metro: Gallery Place-Chinatown) The Phillips Collection If you adore modern and impressionist art, don't miss The Phillips Collection. Degas, O'Keefe, Klee, Picasso, Matisse, Homer...they're all here. Pride of place goes to Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party. The Phillips Collection's permanent exhibits are free on weekdays (donations are encouraged). You can buy weekend admission tickets and tickets to special exhibits at the museum or from Ticketmaster. (Metro: Dupont Circle) Bike Tours Rent a bicycle from Bike the Sites, starting at $7 per hour. Pedal the pathways around the Mall and admire the memorials while you get some exercise. Bike the Sites also offers guided tours from March through early December. (Metro: Federal Triangle) The National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center The Air and Space Museum owns so many historically significant airplanes, rockets and space vehicles that there isn't room in the National Mall building for them all. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, located near Washington Dulles International Airport, is stuffed with one-of-a-kind aircraft, a complete space shuttle and aviation artifacts. It's well worth a visit, and the museum is free. Getting there is tricky unless you have your own car. You'll need to take Metrobus 5A from L'Enfant Plaza or the Rosslyn Metro station to Dulles Airport and then take the Virginia Regional Transit shuttle bus to the museum. If you have a car, parking is $12. --Nancy Parode What is your favorite cheap thing to do in Washington DC? Tell us here. <<Washington DC Home Our Favorite DC Itineraries>> |
