San Francisco: Getting Around

Take the Golden Gate Bridge, add a city by the Bay, and it is obvious why San
Francisco is one of the best cities in all the world. There are many ways to get around
SF On The Cheap and experience the essence of the city as well.

BART:

San Francisco has a unique monorail mass transit system known as
BART (Bay Area
Rapid Transit). The BART line leads directly out of both SFO and OAK airports.
From there, you should be able to get near to your hotel or other place of
accommodation. BART is very easy to navigate, and you can download BART
schedules into your PDA or iPod.

A word to the wise about BART: Know where you are going, and be prepared to
walk from there. For example, the stop at Embarcadero is the closest to Fishermans
Wharf, but it is still about a mile worth of walking.

MUNI:

The
MUNI (San Francisco Municipal Railway) is composed of a lot of transports
including railways and buses. It is one of the largest transportation systems in the
world, and it is also one of the most confusing. Check out the route planners carefully
to avoid getting on the wrong bus or train.

Cable Car:

I suppose you can’t say that you’ve been to San Francisco unless you’ve been on
these historic
Cable Cars. These things may be old but they are still an efficient way
of getting around the downtown area. There are a three cable car routes: the Powell-
Mason, Powell-Hyde, and California. The California line runs down California Street
in an east-west direction, which makes it very difficult to get lost on this one. The
Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde lines are a little more complex. Both of them have
turntable stops near Fisherman’s Wharf, but make entirely different routes. The best
way to figure out where a cable car is going is to look at the signs painted on the side
of it.
