| Cheap San Francisco There are many cheap things to do in San Francisco that suit a wide variety of interests. Here are some of our favorites: Musee Mecanique (Pier 45 Shed A at the end of Taylor Street) This is an odd place located at Pier 45 that is a combination of an arcade and a museum. Several of the coin-operated games are old, but they are still in working operation. Many of them are old papier-mâché statues that dance or move when you insert your coin. You might want to get some change before you enter in, and be grateful for cheap thrills. The Cartoon Art Museum (655 Mission Street) This museum was once a traveling show, but an endowment from Charles Schulz allowed it a permanent residence across the street from the Yerba Buena Gardens. Apparently, there are 6,000 pieces of cartoon art in this collection. The admission price is about $6.00 per adult, so that’s about 1,000 cartoons for every dollar you spend. Plus, it's pay-as-you-wish on the first Tuesday of every month. Coit Tower (Telegraph Hill) This could have been included in the free section, because it costs nothing to visit. Coit Tower is an impressive structure that you can see from nearly anywhere in San Francisco. On the inside, there are some impressive murals. If you want to go to the top, it costs about $3.75, but the view is worth it. The Metreon (101 Fourth Street) This is a four-story building devoted to all things electronic/video-game related. It used to be owned by Sony, but it was recently purchased by a mall developer. Hopefully the new owner will treat it with the respect that it was given in the years before, and update the arcades, low-priced restaurants, and movie theater.
