On The Cheap Travel
Rome: Getting There by Train or Bus

If you decide you don't want to fly into Rome, you can also get there by train or
bus.  Within Italy, the train system is frequent and fairly affordable if a bit crowded.
Of course, it is also pretty easy to get to other European countries from Rome as
well.  Certainly, it takes longer but if you have the time the vistas shouldn't be
missed.

TRAIN:  Trenitalia offers comprehensive service both within Italy and to many
other European hubs.  In fact, you can now purchase tickets online for many
international destinations.  Check out their site for schedules, pricing (remember
that Italy is on the Euro now) and traveling ideas.  Fares are reasonable and the
trains are pretty fast, but definitely keep an eye on your belongings (this is true for
any mode of traveling, but especially important on trains.)

BUS:  Eurolines connects with Rome from Venice, Milan and Florence, as well as
many other major European cities.  If you have lots of time to see more of Europe,
consider their Pass, which is much cheaper than a Railpass, to see a few different
cities.
