Rome: Free Things To Do

If Julius Caesar returned to Rome today, he could still stroll the streets of
the Forum for free. In fact, Caesar could visit many of the city's top sites
without shelling out a single Euro, and so can you.

Our top free picks include:

St. Peter's Basilica

Adorned with artwork by Bernini, Rafael, and Michaelangelo--including his
Pieta--
this church is among the most spectacular on earth.

The Roman Forum

This used to be the center of commerce and politics. In fact, it was the center of
Western civilization back in Caesar's time. Now it's an impressive array of ruins
and arches stretching over half of a mile downtown.

The Pantheon

This beautiful dome that has remained virtually intact over the course of 2000 years,
when it was first built as a temple to Roman gods. Michelangelo was so astonished
by the beauty of this building that he asserted it was of angelic, not human, design.

The Vatican Museum

Four amazing miles of art and sculpture from all corners of the globe, this museum
normally charges $15, but it's
free on the last Sunday of every month.

The Trevi Fountain

An ecstasy of beauty, this fountain designed by Nicola Salvi offers steps and ledges
for sitting, people-watching, and contemplating.

Churches

You'll find ancient mosaics, bones of saints, and art by masters such as Rafael,
Carvaggio, and Bernini in churches throughout the city...all free.
For a particularly memorable experience, visit
Santa Maria della Concezione,
where you'll find the bones of 4,000 monks decorating the walls in the crypt. On
Via Veneto, near Piazza Barberini.
