On The Cheap Travel
Cheap Rome

For less than the cost of a pizza con funghi, you can enjoy many of Rome's best
sights. These are our favorites under 12 euros.

The Colosseum

If men in armor getting gored to death by lions isn't your thing, you still have to see
this place as the template for all modern stadiums. The Colosseum was the Ancient
Roman equivalent of TIVO and remained so for 500 years, starting around 80 AD.
Admission is 10 euros and also covers Palatine Hill.

Palatine Hill

Ruins of palaces built by big-shots in the days of the Emperor Augustus (who, by
the way, opposed gladiator fights). Right next to the Forum. 10 euro admission
includes the Colosseum.

Borghese Gallery

This dazzling museum showcases the best of Roman and Renaissance art.
Sculptures by Bernini and Canova will convert even the aesthetically challenged into
art-lovers. Only 350 people allowed in at any time, so you must reserve in advance.
$10.50 euros includes reservation fee. Save ticket stub for a discount to the
Galleria Doria-Pamphilj.

Excavations under St. Peter's Basilica (The Scavi Tour)

This ancient city of the dead under St. Peter's gives you a peek into dimly lit pagan
and Christian mausoleums. Tour groups are limited to 12 people, so you must
reserve well in advance. You descend underground for 90 minutes, ending at the
original St. Peter's tomb. $10 euros.

Galleria Doria Pamphilj (on Piazza del Collegio Romano, near the Pantheon.)

This aristocratic palace houses one of the best collections of art in Rome and offers
an entertaining audio tour narrated by the current prince. He's a direct descendant
of the Pamphilj clan, whose history goes back to the days of Pope Innocent X. $8
euro admission.
