On The Cheap Travel
   Rome: Cheap Accommodations

In spite of the high price tag typical of Rome rooms, you can find surprisingly good
deals. Here are our picks:

The Beehive
(Via Marghera 8, three blocks from the Termini train station).

The Beehive tops our list with its spotless and stylish rooms, leafy courtyard,
comfortable lounge, revolving art exhibits, and commitment to ecological practices.
Run by an American couple, you'll find dorm accommodations sleeping up to eight
people for $20 per person, rooms in three-bedroom apartments with shared bath,
living room & kitchen for $30 per person, or private rooms with bath for $70. All
come with overhead fans, wifi and high-speed internet, free phones, handmade
soaps & shampoos, plus hairdryers and irons on request. Breakfast not included,
but there's an organic cafe on premises, access to cheap yoga classes and
massage, plus friendly concierge services.

Hostel des Artistes

Guests congregate on the spacious rooftop terrace at this hostel much beloved by
the young and the hip. Mixed-sex dorm rooms for travelers under age 35 start at
$12; private singles with shared bath, mahogany furniture and original paintings on
the walls start at $34. It's safe and clean, with satellite television, free high-speed
internet, free security lockers, and a bar with budget prices. A few blocks from the
train station on Via Villafranca.

Convent Casa Il Rosario
(Via Sant'Agata dei Goti; Telephone: 06.679.2346; irodopre@tin.it)

This place offers a great location near the Colosseum, memorable breakfasts,
internet access, a foliage-filled terrace and a lounge with television. The plain rooms
are spotless and comfortable, but you need to heed the 11 pm curfew. Single
rooms with shared bath start at $35 euros; with private bath, $48 euros.

Anne's Place

Probably the best deal near Rome, this charming B&B offers lovely rooms in the
countryside with private bath, sumptuous breakfast, free internet, and the best hosts
anywhere. They'll drive you to and from the train station anytime, making the 30
minute, six euro trip into the city seem effortless. Anne also drives you to excellent
local restaurants where a bottle of wine goes for $4 euros. Rates start at $65 euros.
