On The Cheap Travel
Rome Cheap Eats

When in Rome, we suggest that you dine where the Romans do. Follow
people in business suits or working men in overalls at mealtime to avoid
substandard, overpriced tourist joints.

Here are some of our favorites:

Tazza d'Oro
Near the Pantheon at Via degli Orfani, 84

Come here for a local-style breakfast of coffee and pastry. There's no seating at all,
but the coffee is to die for. Some say it's the best in the world--and it's a bargain at
under a euro.

Da Baffetto
Via del Governo Vecchio, 114.

A crowded place that's been around for 40+ years, with memorable pizza starting
at 4 euros. Pasta dishes run about $6, chicken $7.50. Add in cheap and delicious
house wine to complete your feast. The lines here are legendary, so arrive before 7
p.m. No credit cards or reservations. There's also a Baffetto 2 near Campo de
Fiore.

BREK
Largo di Torre Argentina 1.

This is a high-class cafeteria, part of a chain with 25 locations throughout Italy. Go
upstairs, where the decor is a colorful, scatter-painted room. Everything is prepared
fresh, while you wait. The selection is extensive, the quality good, and you can get a
complete, hot meal for under 10 euros.

Antica Osteria da Giovanni
Via della Lungara, 41/a, between the Vatican and Trasvetere.

This nine-table restaurant is well off the tourist track and requires a bit of a hike, but
it offers good sit-down meals in a pretty atmosphere for half the price of equivalent
places in city center. Primi and house wine starts at two euros; the most expensive
secondi on the menu runs under 12 euros.

Enoteca Corsi
Via del Gesu 87, near the Pantheon

Lunch only, home style in this cozy, friendly wine-bar with good quality pastas
starting at 5 euros.
