Free New York

Although New York doesn’t have as many free museums and galleries as other
cities, there are still many free things to experience.

Staten Island Ferry

To get a great view of the Statue of Liberty, take the Staten Island Ferry from
lower tip of Manhattan to Staten Island. To get the best view go on to one of the
ferry’s outer decks. The ferry is free and you will have the opportunity to interact
with some real New Yorkers. Take the subway to South Ferry or Whitehall Street
for the easiest access to the ferry.

Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge which connects Manhattan Island to Brooklyn over the East
River, is a New York City landmark. Pedestrian access to the bridge is located in
the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Walking over the bridge will give you a great
view of Manhattan; there is also a small park on the Brooklyn side that will give
you some great photo ops. Take the 6 train to City Hall/ Brooklyn Bridge and
walk east

Times Square

Times Square is the bustling heart of New York. There are always tons of people
here and it can be overwhelming at times. Visiting Times Square is definitely better
at night. The lights are amazing. MTV and Good Morning America both have
Times Square studios so you might want to check them out during the day.

Central Park

Central Park is an enormous oasis in the middle of Manhattan. It is a relaxing
break from the city to take a walk through the different areas of the park. There
are many paths to explore with scenic views of the luxury apartment buildings
bordering the park. Strawberry Fields, the tribute to John Lennon, is found on the
Westside of Central Park between 71st and 74th Street. Many people come here
to pay their respects to the Beatle with music, flowers and poetry. The Dakota,
where John Lennon was shot is nearby to this tribute at 72nd street and Central
Park West.

Washington Square Park

Washington Square Park is located in Greenwich Village. The park is a popular
hangout for NYU students and can be a fun place to visit and people watch when
the University is in session. The park is also home to the famous Washington Arch.
The surrounding streets are also full of interesting downtown people and shops.
Take the A, C, E, B, D, F, or V to West 4th Street.

South Street Seaport

South Street Seaport is a historic area on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
Today there are several shops along the brick streets. Take the 6 train to city hall
and walk east to South Street.

Coney Island

This famous and historic board walk located in Brooklyn is a fun visit during the
summer months. Check out some of the famous side shows, old rides, original
Nathan’s hot dogs, and Totonno’s Pizzeria. Tale the D F N or Q to Coney Island/
Stillwell Avenue.

TV Show Tapings

Many of our favorite TV shows are taped in New York with live studio audiences.
It is best to look into this before you are in the city. Although tickets can be very
hard to get, you may get lucky waiting on standby. It’s worth a shot! Every show
has different policies on stand by tickets and you should know what the policies
are at the show you wish to see before showing up. Most shows will have helpful
information about tapings on the their websites.
