On The Cheap Travel
Hawaii: Cheap Lodging

Oahu:  We like the Seaside Hawaiian Hostel.  It has private and same-gender
dorm rooms, free breakfast and Internet, free snorkeling gear and beach mats, and
it's located in the heart of Waikiki.  Prices range from $21-39 pp and most of the
dorm rooms have an en suite bathroom.

Another smart choice is to rent a condo from a site like
VRBO.  We like this site
because it is easy to navigate and it has great availability calendars.  For Oahu,
check out the
Jurassic Park Condo.   Keep in mind that you can save a ton of
money on food costs because the condos will let you eat in for many meals.

Maui:  We didn't find a hostel we liked on Maui.  (Disagree?  Let us know here.)
We elected to get a condo and again found a great one on
VRBO.  If you're going
with a small group, you might also consider the
Koa Resort.

Big Island (Hawaii):  One of our favorite places is the Hedonisia
Backpacker Hostel, located on the eastern side of the island. The property is
partially located in a volcano crater and is very lush and tropical. The Hedonisia
offers a Volunteer for Work program where you can stay one night free for every
2.5 hours of project work around the property. Jobs range from
gardening/landscaping and housekeeping to web work or massage therapy. There is
a 3 night minimum for this program and the jobs vary, so be sure to check their
website for the latest offerings.

There are more private accommodations available as well, in the form of the
Bamboo Hut and a private room in the Main House. For a truly unique option,
consider the Jungle Bus. Keep in mind that the Volunteer program extends to the
tent spaces only.

Other perks: The owners will pick you up from the airport for a fee and free
yoga practice sessions each morning.

For a more traditional experience, try the
Hilo Bay Hostel. Located downtown
and within easy access to the ocean, Hilo Bay offers reasonably priced dorms (with
double beds!) and private rooms. Lockers are free and there is a large kitchen for
preparing food. A lounge and high-speed internet are also available. Prices start at
$20 per person.

If you want to stay near the Volcanoes National Park, consider the
Pineapple
Park-Volcano location. Dorm rooms (single and mixed genders) and private rooms
are available along with a large kitchen and kayak rentals.
