Budapest: Getting Around

Budapest is quite easy to navigate using public transit.  The underground system is
the oldest in continental Europe and is very user friendly with just three lines.

The
Metro will take you to most of the popular sights.  A ticket or pass is required
for each leg of your trip (no free transfers!) and plainclothes inspectors are
frequently on hand to check.  Be sure to have a validated ticket or pass or risk a
fine of 2500 forints (about $12.50 USD).  For most short trips, a value booklet of
10 or 20 tickets usually sufficient. To see all fare and fine information, click

 Budapest also has lovely yellow
trams that run throughout the city, which is a great
way to see the sights for $1-2 USD.  Tickets are validated on board but must be
purchased beforehand (you can use the same tickets as the metro or the bus).
Choose the 4 or 6 route to see many of the city sights or the 2 route to go along the
Danube banks.

There are also frequent
buses which are the easiest way to get up to Castle Hill and
to the airport.  Buses use the same tickets as the other modes and run frequently.
