La Sagrada Familia-Editor’s Choice

Gaudi’s masterpiece and the main attraction of the city, this work in progress looks
like nothing else. Majestic spires rise above facades like something out of an alien
landscape. You can appreciate this work of art from outside, but if you buy a
ticket, which supports the construction, you can climb the towers for a view of
the city.

La Pedrera

Another of Gaudi’s elegantly curving designs, this
apartment building is one of the city’s most famous sites. You can enjoy the
exterior for free, but to truly appreciate it, buy a ticket to see the rooftop
terrace, a modernist landscape of curving stairways and oversized,
strangely reimagined chess pieces. If you’re in Barcelona in the summer, come
here on a Friday or Saturday night and put up 10 euros for a rooftop evening of
live music, and a free glass of cava, Spanish champagne. Close by, along
Passeig de Gracia, you’ll find more modernista pieces--Casa Batllo and Casa
Mila.

Montjuic

Visit the site of the 1992 Olympic Games and the 1929 World
Fair on this hill overlooking the city, offering some impressive parks and
museums, and some amazing views. Explore Montjuic Castle and the
Olympic Stadium, Joan Miro park or the enormous Magic Fountain, where a
musical light show takes place every summer evening. Although some museums and
attractions on Montjuic aren’t free, the sights and enormous plazas
will offer hours of enjoyment.
